21 Oct The best sustainable straws
youDRESSED Redaktion
By 2021 at the latest, plastic straws will no longer be to be found in supermarkets and restaurants in the EU. So that cocktails, smoothies & Co. continue to be fun – here are the best plastic-free alternatives.
Besides a nice decoration for summer cocktails, plastic straws are above all one thing: they are quite harmful to the environment. Only a few of the 40 billion plastic straws consumed in Germany every year are recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, waste incineration plants or, in the worst case, in nature. It takes 500 years until it is completely decomposed. That’s why we present three sustainable alternatives to plastic.
- The reusable metal model
The metal straw is the perfect alternative for at home or at work. They are almost unbreakable and can often be washed in the dishwasher. Thick, thin with or without kink or even with integrated spoon; there should be the right model for everyone. However, they can sometimes cause a slightly metallic taste. Some also find the cold and solid metal unpleasant.
- Paper straws
Paper drinking straws could be the perfect alternative. They are biodegradable and relatively inexpensive. They are available in different lengths and widths as well as in different colours and patterns. This makes them great accessories for the next garden party. But you have to keep in mind that the paper soaks up after about 30 minutes and the stalk has to go to the garbage.
- The macaroni straw
Probably very few people would have expected this now. But a practical plastic alternative has long been available in almost every supermarket: macaroni. The noodles with a hole in the middle are perfect for drinks and are also cheap. When drinking hot drinks it gets a bit softer and after about 20 minutes they are no longer usable.
