This lake lives up to its name: with a total of 29 square kilometers, it is the largest lake in northwest Germany! In addition, the lake has two islands. The island Wilhelmstein with the fortress of the same name on it invites you to a short sightseeing trip. The bathing island Steinhude is the ideal place for swimming and sun bathing afterwards.

PLACE 4: THE CHIEMSEE

Here comes the next lake in our list. This time it is the Bavarian Lake Chiemsee, which is the largest lake in Bavaria. The lake invites you to a vacation “dahoam” with its beautiful water, the impressive panorama of the Alps and King Ludwig’s fairy-tale castle on the island of Herrenchiemsee.

PLATZ 3: DER BODENSEE

Germany’s No. 1 largest lake only made it to No. 3 in our ranking. However, it still has a lot to offer: Vast vineyards and orchards, its close locations to tourist destinations in Austria and Switzerland, and of course the pretty water of the lake itself, powered by the Rhine!

PLACE 2: THE MÜRITZ

The second largest German lake is located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is part of the Mecklenburg Lake District, one of the most popular vacation regions in Germany. Whether you wanna hike around the lake in the Müritz National Park, take a sailing trip or simply enjoy a sunbathat one of the many beaches – the Müritz has something for everyone.

PLACE 1: THE EIBSEE

Less well-known than its competitors, but still at the top of our ranking! First of all the lake’s location below the Zugspitz allowing a beautiful view of the Alps is already unbeatable. Moreover, the turquoise color of the water give you the impression to be at the Caribbean Sea. Hikers and cyclists get their money’s worth here. It’s even possible to take a swim. But be aware that the lake is super cold.

Wherever you look, Germany has beautiful lakes. Now you know our top 5, feel free to take a visit. However, the best place might not be far away from you and you still don’t know them.
