Chia seeds, goji berries, avocado and acerola – all these foods can be summarized under the term Superfood. Maybe one or the other has had contact with these delicacies before. If not, it’s not a problem, because in the next few weeks we will introduce Superfood to you again and again to explore the background and contents of the trend. At the end of each article you will find a delicious recipe for the presented Superfood.

At the beginning we have a question for you: Which Superfood does nobody know exactly how it is pronounced? Right, the Acai berry. Correctly it is pronounced with an “s”, that means the “c” in Acai is pronounced like an “s”. But back to the beginning…

What is Superfood actually?

Basically, certain criteria have to be met for a food to be called Superfood.

These are:

  • The predominantly plant-based foods have an above-average high proportion of nutrients, active ingredients and/or vital substances
  • They have a positive effect on health and physical well-being.
  • They can be local fruits or grains, but also exotic foods such as chia seeds.

Acai berries – general facts

The Acai berry comes from the Acaizeiro palm from the Amazon. It has a diameter of about one to two centimeters and is dark blue. Its taste is reminiscent of nuts, as it is basically earthy and somewhat greasy. The fruit is found in this country in the form of powder, juice, puree and capsules. More rarely, it is also offered frozen or fresh.

What makes the acai berry superfood?

Basically, the fruit consists of 90% of a core, which is removed for further processing. The flesh and the skin, which is edible, are rich in antioxidants, anthocyanins, vitamins B, C, D and E, minerals and omega fatty acids. Compared to domestic fruits, the Acai berry contains more antioxidants than cranberries, but not as much as sour cherries, for example.

But what are these substances good for?

Antioxidants help contain free radicals and promote cell renewal. As a result, the aging process is slowed down. The vitamins and minerals support this effect and also strengthen the immune system and improve the ability to concentrate.

Anthocyanins also act as antioxidants and at the same time promote blood circulation.

The omega fatty acids protect the heart and support the cardiovascular system.

What is behind the myths of acai berries?

Myth 1: The Acai berry as a weight loss aid

Although the fruit is one of the healthy foods, it can do no more in this aspect. It does not contain any substance in a quantity that can actively promote weight loss, as studies have shown.

Myth 2: The Acai berry as an alternative to wrinkle cream

Due to the antioxidants it contains, the Acai berry works against free radicals and thus slows down the aging process. However, existing wrinkles cannot be smoothed out. The fruit therefore has a preventive effect.
