Berlin Fashion Week: International Fashion Scene Meets In The Capital

youDRESSED Editor

It’s time for fashion! The Fashion Week is held twice a year in Berlin since 2007. From 05.09.2022, the capital will experience a week of diverse shows and presentations. Berlin Fashion Week is one of the biggest events in the German region.

This Week is one of the most important events for current trends and innovations from renowned designers and labels. The history of Fashion Week is interesting and the influence of this week is stronger than expected.

FASHION WALK HISTORY

The concept of catwalks and fashion shows used to be somewhat different – these shows were only held in closed rooms and were only accessible to people who could also afford clothes in that price range. As a model, you also had to meet this criteria.

In 1902, 100 women walked in public for the first time at the closing ceremony of a Berlin Reform Dress Festival. The joy was great, as such a presentation of clothes had not existed before. French fashion designer Paul Poiret was so fascinated by the idea of the catwalk that he showcased his own collection on a Berlin catwalk seven years later.

It took a few more decades for Berlin to establish itself as a fashion city, but now the week-long Berlin Fashion Week takes place twice a year. The capital has gained international importance.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BERLIN FASHION WEEK

In 2007, Fashion Week lasted just four days – but it had a lot to offer! A total of 800 invited guests were present at the eleven fashion shows and were able to admire the new designs and collections of the (aspiring) designers.

Three years later – in 2010 – there were already 200,000 fashion enthusiasts. The additional revenue amounted to 100 million euros! Lala Berlin, Guido Maria Kretschmer, Michael Michalsky and more presented their collections to the public this year.

In the coming years, the number of visitors increased steadily and since 2019 there have also been livestreams for some shows. This allowed more people to follow the catwalks without being there – a relief for international fans.

In 2021, some of the contestants of Heidi Klum’s casting show “Germany’s Next Topmodel” took part in this event. The episode reached over two million viewers.

Berlin Fashion Week is unique and different from the weeks in other countries. This is because the topics of sustainability and digitalisation receive special attention at Berlin Fashion Week. For example, a digital guide for upcycling used fashion is being developed.

WHAT ROLE DOES THE FASHION WEEK PLAY TODAY?

Berlin Fashion Week gives young, sustainable labels and designers a stage. The Fashion Weeks in the various cities have a special impact on the fashion world. Especially the ‘Big Four’ fashion cities Paris, Milan, New York and London have a big influence. Berlin comes in a close second at number 5 and is practically one of the big players.

Mercedes-Benz has been the title sponsor of Berlin Fashion Week since its beginning in 2007. At MBFW you can find international (new) designers showing their collections. Many celebrities are on the guest list and only those invited are allowed to admire the clothes on the catwalk – luckily there is the livestream, which allows everyone virtual entry.

Fashion designers from all over the world will present this year’s collections, up-and-coming designers and new fashion trends from 05.09.-10.09.2022. We are looking forward to seeing the famous names of the fashion world and the new faces of Berlin Fashion Week.
