Sustainability here, sustainability there – There is a lot of talk about this topic, but what exactly is happening in this field? Why should we care more? Here are the fundamentals explained!

Sustainability is an important issue and should actually be taken seriously by everyone. This area can be very versatile, but where should one start? Well, this is where we clarify the important questions.

What is Sustainability

Let’s start with the most important question: What actually is sustainability and why is it so important right now? To live sustainably – in simple words – is to live in an environmentally conscious way and to consume and act mindfully. One’s own consumption is reconsidered and one only uses the resources that are available to one.

The reason why sustainability is so important is the fact that it brings not only short-term, but more importantly long-term benefits. We only have one earth and we have to take care of it.

The three pillars of sustainability are ecology, social issues and economy – these three factors should be treated equally. Ecology stands for conscious action and the use of natural resources such as water, energy and raw materials. The social aspect focuses on people and that they are treated fairly. In the case of the economy, people should not live beyond their means.

Living sustainably means living with an eye to the future. If action is taken now, we have more for the time to come – we actually have no choice. It is our task to give something back to the planet, and that is rest and time for regeneration. We are consuming more than we have resources for far too long. At some point we will reach the dead end. But if we pull ourselves together now, we still have a chance to run in the right direction.

Sustainable living is possible in many areas of life. Whether at home, on the way to work or during a holiday. Opportunities always exist to improve one’s own behaviour and thus help the environment. But where exactly is the start of this new journey?

There are many ways to be ecological when shopping. Only buy what you really need. Reducing your food waste should be the biggest goal. How does this work? Write down you’re shopping list. Before you go shopping, look at what is missing and then make your way to the shop.

To shop environmentally friendly, take your own shopping bag. Not only does it save money, it’s also smarter to take one with you, as you can carry your bag in the right size.

The main motto here: Reduce, Reuse and of course Recycle!

Even we, as ordinary citizens, can make a difference. Our actions may be small, but every sustainable action helps the planet. There is no Earth 2.0, so we must also value the small steps.
