Corsica: Paradise on earth

There are destinations that make your heart beat faster. Corsica is definitely one of them. Why travel around the world looking for the ultimate paradise when you can find one only two flight hours away from Germany? Our editor travelled to Corsica and show us her highlights.

It’s amazing how many beautiful islands exist in Europe. Corsica is definitely one of them. Turquoise blue sea, white sandy beach and solitary bays on one hand, rugged coastlines and steep mountains on the other. Corsica makes both holiday hearts beat faster – wether you’d rather lay on the beach or hike the mountains.

The ideal starting point to get to know the island is the Balagne. Mountain worlds and beach paradises meet in this hilly and fertile region between the coastal towns of Calvi and Ile-Rousse, often referred to as the “Garden of Corsica”. Our editor also lived here, explored the beautiful area and was stunned. Lonely bays with turquoise water, nature and animals in harmony: Free-range sheep and cows and lots of green, no matter where you look. The locals are very nice and open. If you want to experience a typical Corsican event you should listen to the Corsican polyphonic songs in the churches.

But Corsica has much more to offer. The citadel town of Calvi is the fourth largest city in Corsica. With its marina and the picturesque old town, Calvi radiates the flair of a beautiful old harbour town. Bastia is the capital of the Department Haute-Corse and for many also the gateway to Corsica. Bastia is probably the city least crowded by tourists and therefore worth visiting with its alleyways and viewpoints. Between Ile-Rousse and Calvi lies Algajola. The small seaside resort with the citadel and a beautiful sandy beach is worth one or more visits. Our editor grabbed a stand-up paddling board for 12€ an hour per person and explored the beach from the sea.

There is so much more to see and experience on the island. For example the whole south of the island which is too far away from the Balagne for a day trip, but definitely worth a visit with its rugged rocky coasts. Our editor will come back just for that. So pack your bags and off we go to the dream island Corsica.
