Who doesn’t look forward to the delicious delicacies every year? Every family has its own special christmas tradition for the Christmas Eve dinner – but christmas dinner in Germany only consists of sausages and potato salad? Not quite! From roast goose to raclette, we present you the most popular dishes for Christmas Eve.
1ST PLACE: THE CLASSIC POTATO SALAD WITH SAUSAGES
The well-tried potato salad with hot sausages made it to the top of the list of the most popular dishes. About a third of the Germans serve the quickly prepared dish on Christmas Eve. In the case of potato salad, the variations vary according to family custom or regional tradition.
2ND PLACE: THE CHRISTMAS GOOSE
For some, the Christmas meal may be a little more elaborate. Whether it is goose or duck: crispy outside and inside with a delicious filling, it is a real feast for the palate. The perfect thing about this is that while the poultry is roasting in the oven, you can take your time to make suitable side dishes such as dumplings and red cabbage.

3RD PLACE: RACLETTE
Christmas Eve is particularly convivial with a cosy round around the Raclette Grill. With such versatility and countless possibilities for side dishes, meat and cheese, it has become one of the most popular Christmas dinners of the Germans. Because there is no need for hours of cooking and there is something for everyone.
4TH PLACE: THE FONDUE
Fondue is not only the classic on New Year’s Eve! Whether with broth, oil or cheese, the bite-sized appetizers with meat, vegetables or bread are kept in the fondue pot on Christmas Eve too. Also the dessert is provided, with fresh fruits and a delicious chocolate fondue.
5TH PLACE: THE CHRISTMAS CARP
Also known under the name carp blue, the fish is cooked especially in southern Germany for Christmas Eve. The carp, blued with vinegar and boiled in salt water, is best eaten with a special horseradish cream (with apple and cream) and parsley potatoes.
