Summer Trend 2018: Fruit Prints!

youDRESSED Redaktion

We all know it: Fruit Prints. Designers are inspired by fruits such as watermelons, cherries, oranges, lemons and limes to create vibrant prints that just scream for warm weather and a good mood. Fruit prints are also the biggest trend this summer – but they have a long history in the fashion world.

Let’s go back to the 18th century. Here you can already find records of vests embroidered with berries. A little later in 1939, Elsa Schiaparelli, the great surrealist of fashion, delivered a hat made of grapes. And Dior had a sweet fashion inspiration in 1953: cherries, blueberries and strawberries wherever the eye looks. But you don’t have to go that far back. In 2011, for example, Prada revived the banana print. So as we can see, Fruit Prints have already made history in the fashion world.

So why not let the trend blossom again this year? More than ever, fashion has dedicated itself to irony, with the limits of seriousness and frivolity. Over the last ten years, ironic fruit prints have reappeared on the catwalks, from Chloé to Stella McCartney’s tropical fruit salad in spring 2011 to Rei Kawakubo’s Memento mori, inspired fruits for Comme des Garçons this spring 2018.

It also fits great – a summerly and airy dress with fruity prints and a lively Lillet Wildberries with friends. The matching accessories and the outfit is perfect. It makes you want summer and the sea. And the statement is also clear, because as Mrs Prada said about her 2011 spring collection: “It’s time to be brave”. And we’ll give it a thumbs up!
